Conventions of Music Videos & Indie/Alternative Music Videos

Conventions act as common features we see in music videos, for example for general music video conventions you may see hybrid narrative and performance.

An example of this is above ^ Paramore - Misery Business

Here we see the conventions of performance including the band singing along to the song, with close ups of the main singer.

But we can also see narrative interspersed in this and it's own conventions such as wider shots to show whats going on in the scene.

we can also see music cut to the beat of the song this can be seen at 0:11 and also white flashes that go to the beat at 0:18 - 0:20

Another convention that is seen more and more in music video's is the artist featuring in the performance and as a character in the narrative.

Although depending on the genre of a song, the conventions will change with this, for example in rock music you see heavy performance music videos with a lot of dark makeup as seen below in the videos by kiss and the pretty reckless.

This would change if we looked at pop band music for example these videos conventions are again performance based but with dance routines as a feature.

This is also the case for the genre of music that I want to use, indie alternative music. Due to the free ness of the genre conventions tend to be more narrative based to push messages and creative video pieces to the audience instead of dance routines.
