mise - en - scene

How I am planning on using Mise - En - Scene in my music video, (including costumes, props, lighting, colour, location, make up)
Costume

I will be using costume for all of the characters within my video giving them a description of what to wear, the main character will have a range of outfits to represent different days for example the costume of the main character at the beginning and end of the video will be the same costume to show that this is a different time period she will be wearing a white top and red shirt and the costume she will wear in the ‘story’ will be a black jumper and black jeans. extras with wear black jeans and plain black or white tops to not draw away from the main character, the boyfriend will wear a blue denim jacket and the lesbian couple will be wearing yellow tops. I have chosen these outfit choices to appeal to audience by making sure they are current and also timeless ‘black jeans can’t go out of style’. I believe that by using mean outfits for the main protagonist and singer this helps to represent the artist. By also having my outfit choices reflect the genre of music due to their connotations with the genre this also helps, As well as these ‘edgy’ outfit choices matching to the mood and atmosphere of a teen house party this helps add to this atmosphere. By also having the characters have their individual planned outfits throughout the video this helps to establish the characters in their narrative roles for example denim jacket = boyfriend character.

Lighting

Lighting I will be using also acts as props as are visible within my video, the visible lighting i will be using is the disco lights and fairy lights, I will also be using LED phone torches for artificial lighting in the party scenes as well as natural day light lighting and the rooms lights as well as an adjustment to the brightness of the room. I believe the disco lights will add an appealing factor and entertainment factor to the video, and by using a range of lighting as seen in professional videos I believe this will attract the audience by reflecting a real media product. I will also be using the lighting to create a mood and atmosphere for example the disco lighting will add to the mood of the party and the fairy lighting will add to the softer mood of the girls bedroom scenes. as well as the darker room lighting in the party scene also connoting this mood. I want to use a contrast between high and low key lighting to connote the binary opposition within my video for happy and sad moments and blue and yellow colours, again this follows connotations of the genre i discovered in my analysis as man indie alternative videos use high and low key lighting. I believe the lighting will also help communicate the narrative with the change in high and low key lighting reflecting the mood of a scene and therefore the narrative. I don’t believe that the lighting represents the artist particularly but it could be said that the high key lighting i plan to use in the studio scenes with the artist in some ways does represent the artist as high key lighting brings in connotations of clarity and truth and honesty.

Props
  • I will be using a range of props within my production, for decorative reasons and also as key tools to propel the narrative forward. for example I plan to use a vinyl and vinyl player to open the narrative part of my music video similar to the way older Disney movies do with books at the end and beginning of there productions. Therefore we can see that this plays a role within the narrative other props that have roles I have planned include the use of the phone, this will allow the protagonist to realise her disequilibrium (Narrative Theory).

  • Some conceptual props I plan to use are the ink, smoke bomb and powder paint, these add a more arty feel and conceptual element to my music video, allowing for colour and binary opposition.

  • The decorative props I plan to use are in two main scenes and uses, one of these categories is lighting to add more decorative lighting to the scenes, for example I plan to use fairy lights for the bedroom scenes to add a more softer atmosphere to the space, but in contrast to this I plan to use disco lighting in the party scenes to connote the party atmospheric mood. The other category is general decorative props, these are props that have a similar role in the cast that extras do, they are necessary for a more realistic atmosphere and assist in connoting the genre, examples of these I plan to use are balloons, party poppers, champagne bottles and others include a laptop in the bedroom scene.

  • Some of these props fall into both categories as i plan to use these at different stages in the video for different reasons, for example I plan to develop the use of the lava lamp by using it as a conceptual arty element of the video but also as a decorative prop in the bedroom scenes, in some ways this is a nerdy link that i thought would look cool.

  • I believe my props will appeal to audiences as they are items the audience will be able to relate to, and also the alcohol acts as a tool to communicate my representation of youth. These also will act as a entertainment factor for the audience in the party scenes. I believe the arty conceptual props will attract audiences with their uniqueness. I do not believe that the props help to represent the artist herself in anyway particularly, but maybe communicate her beliefs and messages such as her beliefs in teen drinking.

Acting
  • Acting and body language within the piece will be used throughout the majority of the video, I will use a range of acting within my video, for example I have planned basic behaviours characters will display

  • the boyfriend - the boyfriend character will be similar to that of a jock in the American high school movies, he will be a jokey guy who doesn’t take his girlfriend seriously for example still smiling whilst they argue

  • female lead - the female lead will begin the video being confused and stressed with her sexuality to connote this her body language will be very closed and sad and at points aggressive with aggressive hand actions and shouting as the video and narrative progresses she will become more open and relaxed seen by her smiling and joking around.

  • Lesbian Couple - The lesbian couple in the video will be acting as if they would in real life, for example just speaking to eachother at a party, their will be an element of kissing involved but not as a point of sexual gratification for the audience, no more than a straight couple would in a video of a similar nature, this is mainly to demonstrates and make clear that they are together

  • The extras will be mainly behaving excitably in the party scenes demonstrated by groups doing small actions in a continuous shot one group I have planned to do a drinking game and another downing a drink, but there will be one key extra who will be doing a backflip this is to appeal and attract and entertain the audience. The singing/lip syncing acting in the performance section of the video will be used to represent the artist, as the audience will expect this as lip-syncing connotes the artist usually in the piece, I will be developing this slightly by having the cast lip sync too. I will also be using body language to do this, I will be using the connote the genre, by using ‘moody’ looking gazes, we see this in videos such as halseys new americana and lana del rey’s lust for life, as well as the 1975’s chocolate and Never Enough by the Hunna.

Setting
  • Within my video I plan to use a number of locations within my work in three main categories for the narrative I plan to use a room for the vinyl player for the opening sequence of the video I then plan to use my house as a location to film the party scene as the fight scene, as well as frensham ponds for the end of the video

  • For the conceptual element of my music video I plan to use three filming locations, The studio for the powder paint, Frensham for the smoke bomb and tiffs house for the ink video.

  • The last category of setting I plan to use is the studio for the performance setting.

  • I believe by using a range of locations for the narrative i believe this makes my video more attractive to audiences as it reflects that of a real media product.

  • I believe by using a range of locations for the conceptual category of a video this allows for a variety of appropriate locations adding to the attractiveness and uniqueness of the video.

  • I have also planned to use the studio to attract audiences as this allows for the most professional equipment, and therefore again reflecting a real media product such as Paramore’s video Misery Business, This also will represent my artist the most as a location due to the fact that this is where we see the artist performing and presenting themselves to the world, the other locations also do this for example by the choice of location for the conceptual elements this allows for the artist to creatively represent themselves and the narrative locations assist them in the messages they stand for, all of these locations therefore assist the construction of the star.

  • By using locations similar to that seen in real media products such as in Halsey’s new Americana we she the artist in the woods with a smoke bomb used, and in never enough we see the studio used, by using locations already identified within the genres video, this helps to communicate the genre to the audience through connotations and iconography audiences have already picked up on.

  • Again by using locations that are realistic to the narrative for example a real house a teenager has had a party in this helps to make the narrative as realistic as possible, and again by using a real life teenagers room this assists in realism of the product in turn making the product more professional, and adds to the atmosphere of the piece
