Colours and Levi Strauss Binary Opposites
We chose that using colours as a theme in our work, would help to add semiotics to it, we chose Blue and Yellow (Perhaps Purple) as the main colours, With Blue representing Tiff the main character in the narrative, Tiff will play the girl struggling with her sexuality, she will be the ‘blue person’ as she is showed to be sad and confused similar to what the colour blue represents, the actors hair is also blue so this will also help to show the blue colour, the actor will also feature in the performance aspect of the work, she will be showed lip syncing and with a blue smoke bomb,
The other colour yellow, represents happiness and therefore will be shown on the female couple, in there clothes and also will feature in the performance aspect with powder paint,
We also decided as well as the colour chorus clips featuring the cast that we would add some prop chorus clips featuring props such as ink in water in yellow and blue and lava lamp footage
The 1975 uses a black and white aesthetic which continues into their chocolate video, as well as their promotional posters and Digipak. whereas Halsey has a pink and blue aesthetic for her badlands album and music video new americana.
I have used this in my own work, we decided that yellow and blue would be good colours, but we developed this in our work by adding meaning to these colours. we used the colours to signify meanings behind them, yellow for happiness and blue for sad, this is an example of binary opposition. this is used throughout my video and also digital and promotional posters.
red is another colour in our work that is present, red represents love and is well connoted to the colour. red is seen in three main ways in the video, the beginning of the video, the vinyl player. the vinyl player opens the song, this is used to represent a love story is opening. around half way through the narrative there is a scene of which we wanted to use imagery to represent tiff ‘yearning’ of love, this is where she is drinking from the red cup by herself, this was used to show all she wants is love. the last red scene is the closing scene, this is where tiff is with her new partner, who is a girl. for this we got the girl to wear a red jumper, this is to show new love and that love is a full circle and this is represented through the beginning opening with red and the ending closing with red.
Other scenes where we have used yellow and blue colour scheme to represent are quite literally through costume, with the main character unhappy with her sexuality and therefore her relationship, she is wearing a blue top in her studio scenes, her hair is also blue, swell as this the boy she is in a relationship with is also wearing a blue denim jacket. to oppose this the two girls, which the main character is fascinated with and identifies with are wearing yellow tops, one is wearing an identical yellow top to the blue one, one girl is also blonde (yellow).
there are some points in which yellow and blue are used on their own, yellow is used for the title sequence, which features a yellow lava lamp and also the colour of the text itself is yellow. along with this there is one scene in which one half of the female couple is dancing and yellow powder paint is being thrown at her. again to oppose this, their is a couple of solo blue moments in the video, one of these directly opposes the yellow powder paint with the main singer with a blue smoke bomb, the other is where the boyfriend in the blue denim jacket falls into the water, this was used to represent their breakup and him falling into the ‘sadness’ as such. another example of this contrast in our work is the drone shots of which show one of the girls in the pool and it has been edited to be bright and sunny and this is followed by a series of shots of the same place with the main character but is edited unsaturated and miserable.
theres a couple of times which these two symbolic colours are brought together through edited, one of these is with the powder paint and main character, again this overlay can be seen when the blue smoke bomb and main character overlay.
